Slowing the Progression of Myopia

Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, results in difficulty seeing objects at a distance. In most cases, myopia develops in childhood and becomes progressively worse until adulthood. Although myopia can be corrected with glasses and contact lenses, there is no cure for myopia. Fortunately, there are treatment methods available that can slow the progress of the condition, known as myopia control.

Myopia Control Methods Offered

We offer a number of management options to control myopia in children. Our treatment strategies include NaturalVue contact lenses, executive bifocals, atropine eye drops, and ortho-K.

Like multifocal glasses lenses, multifocal contact lenses contain multiple prescriptions. These lenses offer an extended depth of focus, reducing eye strain during near vision tasks like reading. The varied prescription helps to reduce eyestrain, a factor associated with the progression of myopia.

Executive top bifocals are a type of glasses lenses that contain 2 prescriptions. The top area of the lens corrects distance vision while the bottom portion is used for near vision. The near vision-specific area helps reduce eye strain during tasks like reading, which has been shown to help reduce myopia progression in children.

Orthokeratology, or Ortho-K, is a treatment that actually corrects the shape of the cornea to reduce myopia. Specialty rigid gas permeable contact lenses are worn overnight while sleeping, correcting refractive errors like myopia. As long as the contact lenses are worn consistently each night, glasses and contacts aren’t required to see clearly during the day.

Multifocal glasses are designed to give clear vision to patients who have both myopia and presbyopia. The upper portion of the lens allows you to clearly see objects far away, while the lower portion provides you with clear close vision. Multifocal glasses can also reduce near strain, and can control myopia in children.

If either you or your child has myopic eyes, myopia control may be a good option to consider. Speak to your optometrist during your next visit for more information.
