What Causes Dry Eyes?

There are two main causes of dry eye: poor tear quality and insufficient tear production. In other words, if your eyes don’t produce enough tears or they don’t produce good quality tears, you’ll likely experience dry eye.

Tears consist of 3 main components: oil (called meibum), water, and mucin. Meibum ensures that your tears form a protective layer that doesn’t evaporate too quickly, while mucin ensures that your tears spread evenly over your eyes. Problems with your meibum and mucin levels mean poor tear quality, and ultimately, dry eye.

Tears come from various glands in our eyes. Problems with tear production or blockages in these glands can mean you’re not getting adequate tear volume. When you don’t have enough tears, chances are you’ll experience dry eye. Low tear volume can be due to ageing, medication side effects, or even environmental factors like wind.

How We Treat Dry Eyes

Dry eyes can be caused by a variety of different factors, so we customize each treatment plan for each individual patient. Once we understand your eyes, we can recommend a dry eye therapy program for you.

Dry eyes can be caused by a variety of underlying issues, which is why we recommend that our dry eye patients undergo a complete dry eye assessment. This allows us to understand the underlying cause of your dry eyes, so we can recommend the most appropriate course of treatment. We look for the following concerns during your assessment:

  • Insufficient aqueous fluids
  • Meibomian gland dysfunction
  • Blepharitis
  • Allergies
  • Systemic and ocular medication side effects
  • Defects of the eyelids

Once we know what’s causing your symptoms, we can treat your dry eyes more effectively.

MiBoFlow is a dry eye therapy that treats meibomian gland dysfunction, an underlying cause of dry eyes. The treatment consists of a warm compress and gel that are applied to the inside of the eyelid. The gentle warmth dissolves blockages in the meibomian glands, while the outer eyelid is gently compressed, allowing for restored meibum production. A typical session is 10 to 15 minutes and can also help with conditions like blepharitis.

Certain lifestyle changes can be especially helpful for treating dry eyes, including proper nutrition and nutritional supplementation. Omega 3 fatty acids, for example, have been found to reduce dry eye symptoms by improving tear quality. Salmon and other cold-water fish are high in omega 3’s. We can also recommend nutritional supplements like fish oil pills.
