What is Age-Related Macular Degeneration?

Age-related macular degeneration, otherwise known as AMD, is a degenerative disease which affects the macula, the center of your retina. As the disease progresses, patients begin to lose acuity in their central vision responsible for help them read, drive, or even recognize faces.

AMD occurs with age, with the majority of patients found to be over or around the age of 50 at the time of their diagnosis. There are two types of AMD found in patients: Dry AMD and Wet Amd.

Types of AMD

Dry AMD is the most common form of the disease. This disease develops as small deposits of lipids, known as drusen, begins to form underneath the macula. This causes the macula to deteriorate and thin, leading to your central vision to worsen.

Wet AMD happens much more rapidly as blood vessels which form over time underneath your macula begin to leak blood. This leaking directly affects the layers underneath the macula responsible for reading central vision. If you start to see your central vision start to deteriorate, see an optometrist immediately.

What Can You Do?

There is no cure for AMD, and damage to your vision will always be permanent. However, if you book regular check ups to see your optometrist, they can help identify early warning signs of the disease and recommend the best possible treatments to manage and mitigate the disease.
